Veteranâs Victory
The president was pleased at the performances of his staff. They were not only excellent teachers, but they were touched by greatness as public speakers. Professors Gateman and Bennett kept the crowd spellbound with electrifying stories. The audience ate up each word. They couldnât get enough of their incredible journeys through time. Laced with events of thrilling accounts of human conflict. He introduced the third speaker with as much pride as the first two. Last but not least, a member of the distaff side of the facility, Carrie Lawson from the department of mathematics. Her groundbreaking teaching techniques had guided many educators in sharing her ability to make learning easier for numerous schoolchildren. Her positive caring nature made her a highly sought-after speaker at seminars around the country.
Her classes were filled to capacity, and she delivered lectures and demonstrations that shot lightning bolts of knowledge into the minds of so many who were witness to her genius and talent. Like so many accomplished people, she was modest yet confident enough to win over the masses with her self-effacing style. While not perfect, she had enough support to shoot down the few detractors who launched usually futile challenges to her style. She wore her hair close, but it accentuated her caramel-brown skin, neither tall nor short, she began to put on weight from giving birth to two children. Thomas, eleven, and Jennifer, eight, were the apples of her eye. She managed to keep her social climbing husband in check. Larry was a bank vice president and wanted the entire world to know it. Their modest but comfortable lifestyle did not change her. She kept her family together with love and the same common-sense approach she used in her teaching.
As the president was showering her with praise, she thought back to Professor Bennettâs words on the truth. It reminded her of a conversation she had with her family, a week before Recognition Day. They were having dinner. Thomas, better known as Tommie, chimed in.
âMama, we got a big game Sunday, are you gonna be there?â
âSure,â she replied. âTell me, son, what is your batting average?â
â300.â He smiled.
She turned it into a pop quiz. While he stammered, trying to explain how he reached his answer, Jennifer jumped in with the right formula. Everyone laughed including Tommie, who responded with a positive outlook. She would have none of the negativity that she experienced growing up. When Larry tried to intervene with potentially sexist remarks, she challenged him with a question concerning percentages; he failed miserably in trying to fend off her ability to connect the entire conversation to math. She did so with an adroit skill that brought more laughter to their home.
âThank you, honey!â Larry acknowledged.
âMama, you know everything!â Jennifer smiled.
âNot really!â she answered. âBut you must always look for the answers as much as possible!â
She tried not to be obsessed with her work by allowing her children to talk about themselves as much as possible. Larry wouldnât always think that it was important, but Carrie wanted to foster an atmosphere of free expression.
